Yards were gardens, not grass. The coops around the rear of the houses were functional in keeping geese, chickens, rabbits, pigs, cows, etc. These livestock were used for food and helped to suppliment the families’ food supply. (It may be a good idea to rebuild some of these coops and stock them with animals for the “model homes.”)
Mother kept boarders, most of which were relatives. The boarders god fed first; then the women and children ate whatever was left. Many times this was just gravy and bread.
