Planning Your Visit
Eckley encompasses more than 50 major structures and more than 100 outbuildings concentrated around a mile-long main street. To fully experience our exhibit hall and historic village, we recommend allotting two to two-and-a-half hours – though many visitors find reasons to stay longer!
Building Access
Visitors are able to view the interiors of the Catholic church, a miners’ double house, and the Episcopal church during regular hours when staffing levels permit. Buildings are closed to the public between Labor Day and Memorial Day, and for inclement weather.
Please note: Not all buildings are handicap accessible.
School Tours
Eckley offers a unique learning experience for K-12 and college students. The village gives children and young adults the opportunity to learn about the struggles and resilience of the working-class families who mined Pennsylvania’s coal fields from the early 1800s until the present. Themes include immigration and cultural diversity, subsistence farming and domestic life, industrialization and organized labor, and more.
School tours are available throughout the year but must be scheduled at least three weeks prior to the intended tour date to guarantee availability. Reservations are accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis and may be contingent upon staff availability. Large groups may be divided to provide the best experience possible.
Private Groups
Groups of 10 or more can schedule a private tour by making a reservation at least three weeks in advance of the intended tour date to guarantee availability. Our guides are able to lead walking tours or offer interpretation from your tour bus, as needed.
With adequate notice, group tours can be tailored to specific curricular needs or group interests and designed to include any of the following: entrance into the exhibit hall, a 17-minute orientation video about the village and its history, a guided tour of the village, and access to several community buildings and homes. Guided tours last approximately one and a half hours. Admission for group tours is $9 per person. Call 570-636-2070 to make a reservation.
