Energize Eckley: Kyla Cools & Aryn G.N. Schriner, "History Beneath Our Feet: Heritage and Archaeology at Eckley Miners' Village"

Since 2015, University of Maryland's Anthracite Heritage Project has made Eckley its base of operations and generated a wealth of knowledge about labor struggles, gender roles, and subsistence living in the anthracite fields. Discover Eckley's another side on Eckley on this special walking tour of the ruinous foundations, root cellars, and other archaeological troves hidden in the woods around the village.

Kyla Cools is the Heritage Program Coordinator for Patapsco Heritage Greenway (patapsco.org). She is also a doctoral candidate in the Anthropology Department at the University of Maryland, where she also works as an adjunct instructor. Kyla has been working with museums and heritage organizations for a decade and is passionate about labor rights and community engagement.

Aryn Schriner is a doctoral candidate at the University of Maryland. They have written an archaeological report of a Back Street excavation, overhauled the museum's cell phone tour in 2021, and recently currently helping to enhance Eckley Miners' Village's listing on the National Register of Historic Places. They are passionate about workers' rights and the labor movement, both historical and contemporary. Aryn's dissertation focuses on frontline laborers in a Washington, DC museum.

Energize Eckley is a speaker series bringing today's preeminent scholars to Eckley Miners' Village to rethink the anthracite region's past, present, and future. Ticket sales support the design of Eckley's planned interdisciplinary research, learning & discovery center.
