THE POSITION
Are you exploring the field of public history and looking for some real-world experience? The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission’s Keystone Internship Program provides opportunities to pursue your professional growth and contribute to sharing Pennsylvania’s rich heritage with the public. Keystone Internship will be between 225-300 hours and last 10 weeks between 5/15/2023 – 8/20/2023.
DESCRIPTION OF WORK
This is a curatorial internship at Eckley Miners’ Village which tells the story of Pennsylvania’s hard coal industry and the lives of those who inhabited the region. The candidate will work closely with museum staff on a variety of curatorial projects, including artifact research and care, and collection management activities. These projects include inventorying, photographing, and storing archival and artifact collections housed at Eckley Miners’ Village; cataloging items into ARGUS collections management software; and learning about the decision process and obligations to acquisitions. The internship experience will also include public engagement and exhibit development components.

Education Volunteer
The Eckley Miners’ Village Associates has openings for 3 education volunteers per semester.
Hours: Both full-time and part-time hours and days are available (schedule is flexible) and volunteer may extend beyond semester for interested students.
Compensation: This is an unpaid volunteer at a state historic site working for a nonprofit friends group. Please note that many universities and colleges offer credits/units for internships. Furthermore, professional references can be provided for individuals who successfully complete the program.
Location of program: The museum and state historic site are located on a rural route in southern Luzerne County, seven miles east of Hazleton, and approximately twenty-five miles southeast of Wilkes-Barre.
Working Conditions: The volunteer programs are varied and participants will work outdoors and indoors, in the museum, store rooms, historic buildings, and have close daily interaction with members of the general public. Interns should be comfortable in public speaking roles.
Duties: Student volunteers will support operations associated with the museum and historic site, give guided tours, and assist in marketing, web design, annual fundraising and educational events, etc. In addition, students will be required to complete a project, following professional guidelines and protocols, and submit finished materials at the conclusion of the internship. Specific projects can be tailored to a student’s individual educational and career goals.
Qualifications: Volunteer opportunities are open to undergraduate, graduate, professional, and credential students in a variety of fields including those interested in museum education and curation, historic preservation and conservation, history, anthropology, archaeology, communications, web design, education, and other natural sciences (such as environmental science and geology).

- Letter of Interest
- Be in good academic standing
- Have public speaking experience (ex. classroom presentations)
- A writing sample (minimum one page)
- One academic and one character reference
- Due to our location having access to a vehicle is recommended
- Extra consideration will be given to; bilingual applicants, applicants with prior museum or recreational job experience, upperclassmen, and those with an interest in full-time schedules
Rewards: Training will be given in public speaking, tour guiding, museum management and operations, museum education, proper research methods, technical writing, etc. Museum experience is valuable and hard to come by. This experience opens up job opportunities in a variety of fields because of the diverse duties performed during the course of the internship.
