Energize Eckley: Paula A. Holoviak, “Ukrainian Immigration to the Anthracite Coal Region”

Pennsylvania has the second-highest population of Ukrainian Americans in the United States, primarily concentrated in Northeastern Pennsylvania's anthracite region. This talk will focus on the experience of Ukrainian immigrants to the region from the Austrio-Hungarian Empire. It will also reflect more generally on the immigrant experience in the anthracite coal fields. The lecture will be followed by a special performance of Ukrainian dance.

Paula A. Holoviak, Ph.D. is a professor in the Department of Philosophy and Government and the Program Director of the Master of Public Administration program at Kutztown University.  Dr. Holoviak specializes in Pennsylvania politics with an emphasis on rural community and economic development.  Her book Pennsylvania Government and Politics co-authored with Thomas Baldino was published by PSU Press in March.  Dr. Holoviak is very involved in the Ukrainian American community in NEPA.  She is the co-founder and co-director of the Kazka Ukrainian Folk Ensemble, Cultural Director for the Ukrainian Homestead of CEC, ODWU, and president of the Ukrainian American Heritage Foundation of the Lower Anthracite Regions.
